If your child is new to coached sport, choose a first session they are willing to attempt and ask what the coach needs to know beforehand. Their experience, current activities and any relevant health information give the team a better starting point.
The trial is an opportunity for initial observation and a conversation about fit. It cannot establish every aspect of a child's physical ability in one visit.
Before booking: confirm the actual session
Check the activity, age eligibility, venue, duration, fee and booking terms. Ask what equipment or clothing is needed and how drop-off or viewing works at that venue. Use the confirmed booking details for travel rather than assuming every class runs at the same place.
Tell the team about an injury or clinical restriction before participation. A booking confirmation does not replace a suitability discussion.
Give the child a clear explanation
Describe the activity and what they will be trying. You can tell them that the coach will explain the tasks and that they can say when something is unclear. Ask which part they are curious about and whether they have a concern you should share.
Avoid promising they will be good at it or enjoy every moment. Their response to an unfamiliar activity can be discussed afterwards without turning the trial into a test of their worth.
Afterwards: ask for the observation
Ask what the coach saw physically, what instruction they gave and how your child responded. Keep comments about confidence, focus or group interaction separate from physical movement observations. If something needs more observation, ask what the coach would look for next time.
Include your child's account of the session. They may describe a task they found confusing or a part they would like to attempt again.
Choose the next step from what you learned
At STRYDE, an individual trial and an optional Starter Pack are different ways to begin. A Starter Pack is not required before discussing a monthly recommendation. Training frequency should take account of the coach's observations and the rest of the child's week.
Our Multi-sport and Specialist Edge approaches serve different training contexts within youth athletic development for ages 7–12. You can check current programme terms before making a decision.
Share your child's experience and availability to discuss a suitable first session. Let your child help choose what they are willing to try.
